1.7.1: New multilanguage status module
Posted on Thu, 22 Sep 2011
Multilanguage in 1.7.x is getting more and more popular.
(See improvements vs 1.6: http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1468-multilang-in-17-whats-new.html )
Normally, we should not introduce new features in a point release.
But multilanguage is dealing with so many factors that it was necessary to help users as soon as possible to check the status of all these variables.
With this in mind, a new module is added in 1.7.1.
Its name is mod_multilangstatus.
It is not published per default . One has to publish it manually.
It is designed to be displayed in the Administrator status bar. Clicking on its icon/name will pop up a modal window with errors –if any– and status of the most important items concerned.
If published when using a mono-language site, the modal will just display that multilanguage is not implemented.
Once your multilanguage site is set correctly and no more errors showing, it can be safely unpublished.
Here are the steps to follow and the kind of resulting modals one can get.
1. Go to the module manager, filter by 'Administrator' and 'status' position, publish the module.
2. The module now shows in the status bar.
3. If the site is a mono-language site and none of the multilanguage aspects are wrongly enabled/published, the modal will just display:
4. If all the multilanguage variables are set as should, one will get:
5. If something is wrong somewhere *except for the structure of categories/items and specific issues for some templates*, one may get that kind of display:
A little history about this module.
Originally, some code was created by Christophe Demko as Notices/Errors when logging in back-end. This was heaviily depending on sessions checks in order to not display the errors for each page in the Administrator interface..
I then worked on this and made it a CPanel module with errors as well as statuses, so the users would easily at any time take a pick and check if all was OK.
I asked Dennis Hermatski if it could be made as a status module so that one would not need to go to the Control panel to check. He did a great job, making it ajax and it worked fine from the status bar..
Rouven Weßling remarked that it was not using the current model we use for modals and gracefully changed this to use a new view in com_languages.
Some more tweaks, quite a few testers, and it is now in trunk grace to Mark Dexter who accepted this "new feature" to get in for 1.7.1.
A good example of collaboration between all these volunteers
1.7.1 is released, do not forget to update! It contains many other improvements and bug/fixes.

Add2Home
Posted on Thu, 10 Nov 2011
This small plugin for Joomla! add a message inviting iPhone/iPad users to add the web application to the home screen. It also optimize your site by adding all meta that are recognized by Apple iOS browser: autorize resize, screen ratio, startup picture, web app optimize rendering and much more.
The code is compatible with iPhone/iPod touch, iPhone4 and iPad. On older devices the “add†icon is a “+†while on iOS 4.2 it has been replaced with . The script detects the OS version and displays the appropriate icon. The message appears after 2 seconds (customizable) from page load, and is destroyed after 20 seconds (also customizable). The balloon enters and exits the screen with a quick configurable animation: drop from top, bubble from bottom or fade in/out. Additionally it also let you choose a custom icon for your blog when a visitor adds your website to start screen.
Custom Startup images
Specifying a startup image is available in iOS 3.0 and later. On iOS, similar to native applications, you can specify a startup image that is displayed while your website application launches. This is especially useful when your web application is offline. By default, a screenshot of the web application the last time it was launched is used.
Custom Messages
It is possible to override the default message to invite user to add your site to their home screen. In order to be able to support all your visitor locales, you'll have to edit manually the file /media/plg_system_add2home/add2home.js
Viewport
Use the viewport meta key to improve the presentation of your web content on iOS. Typically, you use the viewport meta tag to set the width and initial scale of the viewport.
For example, if your webpage is narrower than 980 pixels, then you should set the width of the viewport to fit your web content. If you are designing an Safari on iOS-specific web application, you should set the width to the width of the device.
“email†describes the properties supported by the viewport meta key and their default values. When providing multiple properties for the viewport meta key, you should use a comma-delimited list of assignment statements.
When referring to the dimensions of a device, you should use the constants described in “number†instead of hard-coding specific numeric values. For example, use device-width instead of 320 for the width, and device-height instead of 480 for the height in portrait orientation.

Join or Start a Production Working Group
Posted on Tue, 13 Sep 2011
Do you have a feature that you’d like to see in Joomla? Do you have an interest in a specific area that you think needs work? Think about joining or starting a Production Working Group on that topic. These working groups are led by community members and have regular contact with the Production Leadership Team. This is a good way for people to work together to create code that has a good chance of getting into core.
Information about existing Production Working Groups is on this wiki page: http://docs.joomla.org/Production_Working_Groups If you would like to start a formally recognised Production Working Group then please make your proposal using the procedure on the wiki page.
Production Working Groups are not restricted to coding tasks. A group could form for the purpose of producing a specification, for doing research, for writing documentation, or for other jobs that need doing from time to time.
If you have an idea and want to form a group to work on it, then why not propose it? The Production Leadership Team (PLT) will review all proposals and if we think it is something that fits in with the vision and strategy for the project then we’ll help you get started.
For more details on how Production Working Groups work, see the announcement on the developer’s site: http://developer.joomla.org/news/359-new-production-working-groups.html

Joomla! Rocks on Its 6th Birthday
Posted on Thu, 01 Sep 2011
Today is Joomla's 6th birthday!
On September 1st, 2005 the Joomla name was unveiled for the first time.
On September 1st, 2005 many of us started an exciting journey and we're delighted that you've joined us along the way.
Last year on this day we said a huge "Thank You!" to everyone involved in the project.
This year we're going to briefly look back at where we've been. Joomla is still growing and thriving. In the last month alone we passed three important milestones:
500,000 Joomla.org forum users
25,000,000 Joomla downloads from Joomlcode.org
8000 listings on the Joomla Extensions Directory

Building on the Platform
Posted on Sun, 21 Aug 2011
If you missed the happy twittering, last week at the Joomla! Day Chicago there was a spontaneous gathering of developers--yes, that includes you Ryan Ozimek--shut up in a room having a great time writing platform applications. As Nicholas Dionysopoulos said to me “I guess that will put an end to the incessant "why did we have to separate the platform from the CMS" question. To be honest, I had the same question myself, until Joomla! Day Chicago and the awesome (and immensely fun and productive) Joomla! Platform session :)†Nick already even proposed a CLI application to include in the core of the CMS.
What exactly is a “Platform Application Well you already know three of them: the Joomla! CMS, the Joomla! CMS Administratror, and the Joomla! CMS Installer. Ok, so what more could anyone possibly need? In truth the sky is the limit. The Joomla! Platform can be used to build all kinds of PHP applications, some of which may work with the CMS and some of which are totally separate. Building a simple platform application is even easier than building a simple module. In fact, you can do it in just one file.

Extreme Makeover Joomla Day Austin Edition
Posted on Mon, 15 Aug 2011
Joomla Day Austin is right around the corner, held on September 15th in Austin, Texas. JDay Austin will be unique for several reasons such as being held in a historic Austin movie theater located in downtown Austin and using an entirely different presentation method. The most important difference is that the team of speakers is currently constructing a new Joomla website for an Austin Non-profit, Minis and Friends.
A Special Format
Since JDay Austin will take place in one movie theater for 8 hours, we had to get creative with our presentation method. The normal workshop approach of multiple rooms with multiple tracks wouldn't work in a theater. Instead we opted to put well-known Joomla speakers in teams of two. Each team of two would represent a different Joomla profession. These teams will present on how to build a Joomla site from beginning to end, from soup to nuts, all on one big movie screen.
A Special Non-Profit
The back-to-back teams of two solved the format issue, but one question remained: What kind of site would we build? We have some of the absolute best Joomla teachers, contractors, designers and developers in the industry. Should we waste all that effort and talent on some fake company and site? No, that wouldn't be right. Instead we decided that a local non-profit would be much more deserving. A contest was held to nominate the most deserving, mostly with applications from members of the Austin JUG. In the end we decided that Minis and Friends was the perfect candidate. Everything in their site screamed the need for Joomla (the site even somewhat resembles the milkyway template even though it's not a Joomla site).
For those in the States, this truly feels like the Joomla version of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" where a lucky/needy family is selected and a team builds a fantastic home for them.
I challenge you to visit the Minis and Friends website and not get a little emotional, and want to lend a helping hand.
A Special Team
The Joomla Day Austin team of speakers is second to none. Working to help a deserving non-profit is the most rewarding aspect, but working with this team is definitely second-most rewarding:
Site PlanningCory Webb & Jen Kramer
Template DesignAndy Miller & Kyle Ledbetter
Extension DevelopmentAlex Andreae & Jeremy Wilken
Site DeploymentBrian Edgerton & Joe LeBlanc
Last, but certainly not least we'll have closing comments by Ryan Ozimek & John Coonen.
A Happy Ending
We're currently in the re-design process, but you can be certain that the final outcome will be a wonderfully built Joomla site. I'm personally working on my design entry, which will go head-to-head with Andy's design :)
Giving like this is exactly what Joomla is all about. When you put the world into perspective it's about people and helping, not small irritations in our beloved CMS.

JDay Bosnia - Make Joomla!, not war!
Posted on Sun, 14 Aug 2011
Tešanj (pronounce 'Teshagn') is a small ancient town in the North of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a now independant country that was once part of what was Yugoslavia.
Although it looks now totally peaceful, nothing showing, except for a few bullet holes on some walls, the terrible war that took place in that region of the world from 1992 to 1995, I am told that, beyond the curtains, some old loves and hates are stil present between the 3 communities.
It is there that was held on August 12th and 13th, the first JoomlaDay ever in what was Yugoslavia. The ancient Illyrian ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illyria ) sun symbol was chosen as the logo of the event, to further show the need for unified efforts in the region.
It was the occasion for 3 co-founders of Joomla – Emir SakiÄ‹, Brian Teeman and myself– to meet again in person for the first time since the 2005 first Joomla core Summit.
Happily, that reunion was not the most significant part of that event.
It was also not only the first time a formal Translation Teams meeting was held in Joomla history, but also a great symbol of the slogan: "Make Joomla!, not war!"
After the terrible choc of the recent wars in this region, it demonstrates that people of good will have no borders and can cooperate to help communication between torn apart nations.
I do feel strongly that Joomla! showing the example is a great accomplishment.
The photo hereby speaks for itself:
Launching a first time JDay on 2 days was a challenge and attendants did have to face long trips on winding roads to reach TeÅ¡anj (21 hours bus for Ilija to come from Macedonia). It is therefore with extreme attention that the various conferences were listened to. Between the presentations, which went from the history of Joomla, muultilanguage in 1.7 to developing with MVC, the Bosnian coffee pauses were the pretext to go further into the respective experiences with Joomla. Tweets went on and, yes, wifi was working great (a steady 2.44 mbps) and was free, contrary to some hotels in California…
Although it will not surprise our international language communities, the diagram hereby demonstrates more than with a thousand words the importance of Joomla in some countries. The statistics concerns the .mk domain names. http://top.net.mk/
The Translation Team meeting was very positive. Things are so much easier when the virtual forum aliases are replaced by real life people! The latin alphabet users (Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian) agreed to extend their collaboration, not only for the language packs, but also concerning help online and tutorials.
Before the last trip to the Internet Café and its delicious 'ÄevapÄiÄ‹i' (search on google ), the hard core organisers and conference presenters gathered for an ultimate group photo in the town theater.
Thanks again to Admir Agiċ and team for the perfect organisation of the event (http://joomla.ba).
The last words were: "Let's meet next year in Sarajevo!" Joomla! rocks! "Joomla! je zakon" or "Joomla! је закон"
Another symbol, I guess.

Who is Joomla-jenkins?
Posted on Wed, 03 Aug 2011
The other day someone watching the platform at github asked me “Who is Joomla-jenkins?†That certainly seems to be someone doing a lot. Except it’s not exactly someone.
Jenkins is continuous integration software (a fork of the Hudson project) which is used to ensure the stability of the platform by running unit tests, style checks and various analytics.
Ian MacLennan recently announced a process change where all pull requests (requests from someone to have code committed) should go to the staging branch. That’s to allow the commit to be made and tested. If the tests fail then the “pull requester†needs to fix the code before  it is committed. That way test breaking code never makes it into the “point of truth†master branch.

The Story Behind the Story of the 1.7 Release
Posted on Mon, 01 Aug 2011
Every Joomla! release has its moments of drama, tension, and transcendence. Inside the Joomla! Bug Squad in the run up to the release is always a flurry of intense activity. 1.7 was no different in that.
While most people probably know that the release of Joomla! 1.7 was a first because it was a time based released: back in January it was announced that the release of 1.7 would be in July, and the great thing is that we did it to the exact date and minute that was picked in late June.  That doesn’t mean there were no hair raising moments though!

What You Need To Know About Joomla 1.7
Posted on Wed, 13 Jul 2011
In case you had not heard, Joomla 1.7 will be released on July 19, 2011. This is the first release under Joomla's new 6-month release schedule.
1. Should I update my Joomla 1.6 site to Joomla 1.7?
Absolutely you should. In fact, you must. Joomla 1.6 will reach the end of its life in August 2011, just a month away. After that, Joomla 1.6 will have no further security updates, meaning that if a security problem is discovered, it will not be addressed. And that means if your site is hacked due to a 1.6 vulnerability, you will have no recourse to fix the site, other than to move it to 1.7 anyway. You might as well move it sooner than later!
Oh, and upgrading from 1.6 to 1.7 is designed to be a very simple, one-click process.

Widgetkit is getting bigger
Posted on Wed, 13 Jul 2011
Widgetkit has been around for 6 weeks now and during this time a lot has happened. First we like to thank everyone who tried the Widgetkit betas and has send us feedback. We really appreciate it! Until today we have released 5 betas including bugfixes, optimizations and new widgets. Here are some notable features we've added so far: translations, RTL support, editor support for Joomla's TinyMCE and JCE, caption support for slideshows and HTML5 video playback in the lightbox. With the upcoming release of Joomla 1.7 on 19. July 2011, we've also updated Widgetkit to support the latest 1.7 version as well. This makes Widgetkit work perfectly on Joomla 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 and the latest Wordpress 3.2. Here is an overview of all the new widgets we've added since the first beta release:
Gallery
The gallery widget provides a great way to create an image gallery with multiple images on your website. With the built in directory browser you can easily add or remove image source directories and create your individual gallery in no time. To change the gallery's overall appearance we've added two new styles with BETA5, wall and slider, to current slideshow style. The wall style allows you to create image and polaroid walls with a lightbox and spotlight effect. The slider style puts the images next to each other and shows them fullsize on mouse hover with a sliding effect. Just pick your favorite style and everything else is done automatically in the background for you like image resizing and caching. It has never been that easy to create an awesome looking gallery!
Map
The map widget let's you create maps with multiple locations and markers. Powered by the latest Google Maps API you can change various settings to create a map which perfectly fits into your website. The new style settings allow you to change overall map colors and adopt your site colors to the map. We promise that you'll love this one!
Accordion
The accordion widget creates a group of items using a smooth sliding effect when selecting an item to display its content. We added a simple and clean style to make the accordion easily match to a broad range of websites.
Media Player
We unveiled the media player already in BETA4 which let's you playback video and audio files directly in your website content. Embedding videos is simply done through HTML5 <video /> element which is also widely supported on mobile devices like iPhones, iPads or Android phones and tablets. You also don't need to worry about older browsers, because it has a flash fallback for all who don't support these HTML5 elements. You can even play your .mp3 files by using the new <audio /> element. Great, is'nt it?
ZOO Integration
Widgetkit and ZOO are now able to communicate! This has been one of the most requested features and we are glad to deliver it to you now. By using a Joomla plugin you can display any ZOO content within our freshly released widgets like accordion, map and slideshow. Make sure to have the latest ZOO version installed as you'll need it to customize the content that is being displayed.
The workflow is pretty straight forward and should already be known to you, if you've been using the ZOOtools. There is a new button in the Widgetkit dashboard called "Add new (ZOO)". Upon hitting it, you'll be able to choose what content from ZOO to display. By customizing the layouts of the item types you may assign any element you want to be displayed. So enjoy the power of our fresh widgets paired with the comfort and the flexibility of the ZOO.
What's next?
We are still not done yet! We will continue with adding new features to Widgetkit and we are also working on new widgets and style variations for existing widgets. If you have not tried it yet, make sure to check it out and send us feedback about how it works for you!

JUG meetup in retrospect
Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2011
Yesterday was the Joomla User Group meeting we organized in Hamburg. Thanks to all of you who joined us. We all had a great time! We were about 30 people - from newbie to experienced Joomla user. Most of them came from Hamburg and nearby but some even traveled a longer distance from Mannheim! The meetup started at 19:30 and the last ones left shortly after midnight. We had a lot of nice conversations and it was great to meet all the people who are passionate about Joomla chatting together.
We didn't expect that much people so for us the JUG meetup was a big success. We got a lot of positive feedback during the meetup so we are confident to be organizing a second JUG meetup later this year. But next up is the Joomladay in Hamburg on September 2nd and 3rd. We will be there on both days (Business and Community Day) and will be available for all kinds of questions. We hope to see all of you guys there!

Drupal 7 Update
Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2011
I wanted to give everyone an update on our progress in converting our themes to Drupal 7.
As stated in some of the threads in the forums, this is not a trivial task. Drupal lists 62 core things that need to be updated when converting from a D6 theme to a D7 theme. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our themes.

Slight delay on Joomla July Template + RokGallery Release
Posted on Mon, 04 Jul 2011
Although the plan was to release on July 5th, we are going to push back the release of our July Joomla Template and our new extension, RokGallery, to Thursday July 7th. This delay is because there are just too many features and functionality we feel must be in the initial release.
We want to get at least IE9 support for the administrator, some minimum requirements checking, translation strings sorted, some polish on the jobs manager, and an assortment of critical bugs. We have updated all Joomla and Joomla Developer memberships and extended them again so anyone that was expiring near the 1st has been given another full week of membership. We apologize for the delay but we just don't want to ship a ground breaking extension such as RokGallery that is not up to our high standards of execution. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
If you have not heard of RokGallery yet, you can read more about it In our
"Intro to RokGallery" blog post

RocketTheme Conference
Posted on Wed, 20 Apr 2011
We have been internally discussing the possibility of hosting a RocketTheme User/Developer Conference. The idea is that we would organize and host a 1 or 2 day conference in a that we could use to cover a variety of topics.
To start with we will probably focus on Joomla as it's the most popular CMS among our members.
Topics we are bouncing around include:
Customizing Existing Club Template - How to take an existing design and modify it completely for your clients
Design-to-Template - Workshop on how to take a custom design to finished Joomla template (multiple part full day workshop covering all aspects of the process)
Cross-Browser Testing and Gotchas - How to debug and fix browser bugs and issues
Gantry Framework Tutorial - The ins-and-outs of the Gantry Framework including how to implement and extend it
RocketTheme Extensions - How to use, modify, and implement a wide-variety of functionality with our array of extensions
MooTools Development - Core concepts, differences compared to other JS frameworks, developing cool mootools based scripts, how to upgrade scripts from version 1.11 to 1.3
Advanced Q&A - Ask the team anything!
If you have any ideas for a session that would be beneficial to a large portion of users, please reply to this thread with your concepts.
What we are interested in is how many people would be interested in attending a conference like this? We are not certain on any exact details (location, price, schedule) at this point, but if we get a decent amount of interest we may proceed with planning and development of this idea.
If this idea is successful and popular, we could have multiple of similar events in a variety of locations.
Please provide us your best 'honest' answer to if you would be likely to attend an event. Please answer without regard to location at this point. We're trying to gauge the validity of the 'idea' not specifically an event in a certain locale.
Voting is open to all past and current club members on our forum, so please vote now!
Cheers!

Magento 1.4 Development Cookbook Review
Posted on Mon, 11 Apr 2011
I've spent the last couple of evenings reading over the latest Magento books from Packt Publishing - namely their Magento 1.4 Development Cookbook and their Magento 1.4 Themes Design - which they kindly sent me review copies of after discovering RocketTheme "while searching for professionals with Magento development experience". Considering I've spent the best part of the last 2 years working exclusively with Magento - both developing extensions and constructing themes - I guess I'm pretty well versed in the ways of Magento, but as Magento is such a large system, I figured I'd likely learn something new, so I took them up on their offer. So, in case anyone is considering purchasing some Magento study guides, I'm going to give you a quick review of each book. First up, it's the "Development Cookbook".

Update on Joomla 1.6 Conversion Progress
Posted on Wed, 02 Mar 2011
Over the past two months we've been diligently working on the process of converting our Joomla 1.5 framework, extensions, and templates to Joomla 1.6. As we've explained in previous blog posts, this is not a trivial task and on top of our existing heavy development workload, this has taken more time than we had originally anticipated. However, we are now making great progress, and the last few major hurdles have been tackled. Today we released 9 Joomla 1.6 extensions, and we have at least 8 more that are very close to being packaged and released also.

How to report a Joomla bug
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2011
The CMS called Joomla is a product in constant evolution. Yesterday, the Joomla Production Leadership Team released Joomla 1.7.1. And it's all based on volunteer efforts. When a new version like 1.7 is released, there is bound to be number of bugs or incompatibilities in it. The complexity of Joomla, all the extensions and templates available, as well as the human factor makes that an inevitable fact. And sometimes, one finds out that the solution that was chosen doesn't work as well as expected and needs to be adjusted.
To be able to find all bugs and incompatibilities, the PLT, needs feedback from the community.
The question is, how do you report a bug in a way that is useful?

Why blog with Joomla? Part 2
Posted on Thu, 15 Sep 2011
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about why you should use Joomla for blogging. Now I want to expand a little on the topic.
I've been blogging with Joomla since 2009 and don't want it any other way. I think there are plenty of reasons why one should use Joomla for blogging. So the question if it is right for you. Not trying to convince you (OK, just a little), but the aim of this post is to help you decide on whether or not to use Joomla for your blog project.

Want to charge for Joomla content? Try the free MediaPass extension
Posted on Mon, 12 Sep 2011
If you produce content for a blog or other Joomla website, you might want to charge for some of or all of the content. This business model has been successful for many WordPress blogs out there. The blog owner gives away a lot of free content, and then produces premium content that you can pay to access. Now, this funcionality is available for Joomla websites as well.
By downloading the free MediaPass extension, Joomla users can enable a recurring subscription service, without adding code manually to their template or articles. Publishers can even add the MediaPass subscription box to articles of selected categories automatically. This eases the use of the extension significantly.

How about a Joomla learning holiday in Spain?
Posted on Thu, 08 Sep 2011
How would you like to enjoy a weekend at a 5-star hotel in Mallorca, Spain? How would you like to learn about Joomla topics from people with years of experience in their respective fields? How would you like to be taught in a small group of 12 people, getting personal tips and hands-on experience?
Now it is possible! Alexis Sotir, Daniel Dimitrov and Yen Tang had the idea earlier this summer. After having talked to some people in the community, they decided to create a series of Joomla workshops at Mallorca. The idea is to have people come there and learn in a relaxed atmosphere, from experienced Joomla community members.

Why blog with Joomla?
Posted on Wed, 31 Aug 2011
As you know, I’m blogging with Joomla myself. I find the Joomla platform to be a really good platform for blogging. But is it right for you?
In this post I explore some reasons why I think you should use Joomla as a blogging platform and why it might be a good choice.
If you're a Joomla addict like me, it seems only natural to use Joomla as a blogging platform. I have seen some blogs about Joomla that are built with Wordpress. To me, that's quite silly. If you're writing about how to use Joomla, you should use it for blogging as well, in my opinion.

Creating a Simple Custom CSS Joomla Plug-in
Posted on Tue, 08 Nov 2011
Not to long ago, I got a request from a user about the best way to add some custom CSS to a template. I replied that one of the best and most “Joomla†ways to add extra CSS definitions to your site would be to create a simple Joomla Plug-in. To me this, is just a few minutes of work, but I can understand that it could be a little daunting to people who have never done this kind of thing before. This article goes through the steps necessary for creating a simple plug-in if this kind so you can take and expand this idea for your own needs and requirements.

Important Security Vulnerability Fixed
Posted on Sat, 12 Nov 2011
A couple of days ago we were notified about a SQL injection security vulnerability in our Ajax-enabling RokModule extension. This extensions is generally not used by itself, but rather it enables Ajax for the following extensions for both Joomla 1.5 and 1.7:
RokStock
RokWeather
RokNewspager
Even if you are not currently using these extensions on your RocketTheme based site, you may still be vulnerable if you have these extensions installed. It is strongly advised that you download the latest version of RokModule and install it immediately to address this issue:
RokModule v1.3 for Joomla 1.7
RokModule v1.4 for Joomla 1.5
You can determine if you have this extensions installed and if it needs updating by using the Extensions Manager in the Joomla Administrator and clicking on the Components sub menu option. Then you just need to look for RokModule in the list and check the version.
You can download the latest version here: RokModule Downloads
NOTICE: for Joomla 1.5 it's safer to uninstall the existing version of the com_rokmodule component prior to installing the version.
Also we've updated the extensions themselves with this updated version, along with RocketLaunchers and extensions bundles for the affected templates.

Languages: 1.7.3 improvements
Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2011
1.7.3 is introducing quite a few improvements concerning multilanguage and languages in general.
A. Multilanguage
1. In 1.7.1 was introduced the new Multilanguage Status Module: http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1501-171-new-multilanguage-status-module.html
In 1.7.3, a necessary improvement is implemented: checking the status of the Contacts linked to an Author, as it is necessary to create a unique contact per author and tagged to 'All' languages OR one contact per published Content Language.
If an error occurs, a message is added in the modal with the user name concerned (Thanks Marc Studer and Christophe Demko):
2. It is now possible to customize the Site Name depending on the Content Language displayed.
A new parameter has been created in Extensions=>Language Manager=>Content tab=>Edit a Content Language:
3. By enabling a parameter when editing the Language filter plugin, users will at last get a new feature that has been expected for long:
the Content Language prefix will not be used anymore in the url for the Site default language when SEF is on!
(Thanks to all who participated in trying to patch this —See: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemEdit&tracker_item_id=25037 — and to Christophe Demko who solved it.)
Extensions=>Plugin Manager=>Filter by System=>Edit System - Language Filter
Front-end result:
4. The batch processing in various Managers in back-end now includes a Language field.
It is now possible to batch-change language for ticked items, as well as batch-copy including Language change to another Menu (in Menu Manager) or another Category (Thanks Michael Babker). We hope to also include Menu Associations in this process for 2.5 .
B. General Languages improvements
1. Global Configuration now includes a default Offline Message per Language pack.
If this option is chosen, the offline message will be customized depending on the site language displayed.
It is always possible to override this value by using an xx-XX.override.ini ( See http://docs.joomla.org/International_Enhancements_for_Version_1.6#Language_String_Overrides )
2. The Administrator Help menu may now propose different forums to link to, depending on Language.
A registered language pack may propose a link to the Official Language sub-forum on forum.joomla.org. Custom distributions may propose links to their own external Community Forum by adding in their customized sample data the said link.
Users may decide of their preferred help forum.
Module Manager=>Filter by Administrator=>Edit Admin Menu
3. A new column has been added in the Installed Languages Managers to display the Language tag (en-GB, fr-FR, it-IT, etc.)
Thanks again to all who participated in implementing these improvements and do not forget to upgrade to 1.7.3 !
http://www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5392-joomla-173-released.html
And last but not least, we do now have an official multilanguage demo site (now updated to 1.7.3) where users can log in back-end to make sure they structure their site correctly:

The Busiest Year Ever for Joomla!Days
Posted on Wed, 09 Nov 2011
During the last year we've shared some hard numbers behind Joomla's growth. We saw that Joomla.org has grown 50% in 2 years and also that there were now 1/2 million forum users, 25 million Joomlacode downloads of Joomla and over 8000 extensions on the JED.
This weekend marks another important milestone: 2011 will be the busiest year ever for Joomla!Days.
The community have a done a great job listing all over the Joomla!Days that have taken place: http://docs.joomla.org/Joomla!Days. The previous high was 23 events in 2009. This year there have been 21 events already and four more are planned for this week alone:
Joomla!Day Australia - November 5-6, 2011 - Sydney, Australia
Joomla!Day Finland - November 5, 2011 - Helsinki, Finland
Joomla!Day Spain - November 9-10, 2011 - Zaragoza, Spain
Joomla!Day Midwest - November 12, 2011 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
Thank You
It's worth taking a moment to thank all of the organizers who have made all of the previous 100+ events possible.
The Dutch community deserves a mention: every year they've run a Joomla!Day once and sometimes even twice.
Also, welcome to the newcomers in 2011: Chile, Algeria, Malaysia, Greece, Chicago, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milwaukee, Israel.
We hope to see all of you at a Joomla!Day in 2012. If you think you can help us hold even more events next year, the Joomla community has a great guide on how to get started.

2011 Joomla Day New York Recap
Posted on Wed, 02 Nov 2011
Thanks to the platinum sponsor Seblod, creator of a new CCK for Joomla!, we were able to host a dinner party on Friday night for 50 of our sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and international guests. The wonderful staff at House of Brews made our event quite memorable. It was exciting to have so much Joomla! talent in one room - core team, OSM board members, major component developers, hosting companies, and grateful end users mingled as the excitement level grew for the coming weekend events.
On Saturday, our generous benefactor Microsoft helped us invite all conference attendees to a party at the House of Brews. Seventy participants discussed the events of the day over beer, wings, and sliders.
After the planning and craziness is over, I can happily say that JoomlaDay2011 was a tremendous success.
Friday, the leadership team along with about 30 other attendees met to discuss where Joomla! should go in 2013. Unfortunately, I was unable to participate as I would have liked because I was setting up for the weekend. Regardless, I heard lots of great discussions occurred. It is exciting to see where Joomla! will be going to in just a few years!
Friday night we invited the sponsors, speakers, and volunteers to another party at the House of Brews. They really put on a great event! We had beer towers, appetizers, a great dinner, and, of course, dessert. They even presented a chance for me to mingle and meet with many of our international guests. What a way to start the weekend! The conversations ranged from politics, to Joomla!, and to current world events. I am proud to say we had guests from various countries including Western Australia, Israel, Columbia, Germany, France, Canada, and more.
Saturday morning started very early with a couple of headaches. Unfortunately, the coffee was not brewing as it should have been, but that did not slow down the presenters or workshops. Although, I must admit, people seemed a little fuzzy before they finally got their cup of Joe. With plenty of bagels, muffins, juice, and other accoutrement, the keynote began at 8:45. A special thanks to Ryan for creating a video for us that we were able to watch all together.
Each session on Saturday lasted for over an hour. We had sessions based on extensions and 3rd party developers, sessions based on what can be done with Joomla! from a developer perspective, and other sessions focused on the 'business end' of Joomla!. Each session was well attended, and there were definitely a variety of sessions to choose from. In fact, the number one complaint that I have received so far was that attendees had too many quality sessions to choose from. Well, we have a solution for that, too! We have posted the videos on the www.JoomladayNYC.com website for attendees to check out sessions they were unable to attend.
Saturday ended again with another trip to the House of Brews. Thanks to a generous donation from Microsoft we were able to provide appetizers and beer for the attendees. I think everyone enjoyed another night out with the Joomla! folks! Some did ask why we were at the House of Brews again. To be honest, we could not find another bar/restaurant that would host our event because we had no idea how many would attend on Saturday night. It could have been anywhere from 10 to 70. So, instead of picking a place where we would have to wait in line, we decided to be better safe than sorry. A special shout out goes to Marian Konop of Gotham Informatics who planned all of these parties.
Sunday morning began with another near coffee catastrophe, but we persevered by having the coffee ready for our guests by 8:30. Thank goodness. With the amount of work to be done Sunday, we really needed the caffeine! Elin gave a great keynote about Joomla! and how to get involved, which is something we all need to do. We even added a 'bug squashing' session that day. Rob Schley gave the entire group a view into the Unified Content Model that he started creating at Ebay. We are looking forward to seeing what gets integrated and how all of this will work out. The sessions Sunday were developer-focused; we adjusted some tracks as needed to try to make as many participants as comfortable as possible.
We closed the day on Sunday with a stump-the-speaker one more time, and the questions and answers were as various as any JoomlaDay conference should be.
All in all, we, the organizers from this year are exhausted yet energized. I know personally that I am looking forward to attending other JoomlaDay to have the experience from a 'guest' perspective and 'learn a little more'.
Thanks again to the sponsors, speakers, and volunteers for following through with a great event!

Search and Joomla! CMS 2.5
Posted on Thu, 13 Oct 2011
Search is a central function for any content management system, and the Development Working Group has been working in a Github repository on making search be super powered in Joomla! 2.5.  Michael Babker has taken the lead in organizing this along with Chris Davenport. So far six people have contributed code. The original code for Finder in Joomla! 1.5 was done by Rob Schley, Louis Landry  and Andrew Eddie and distributed by JXtended.
I’ve heard Rob say at several Joomla! Days that Finder is the favorite of the extensions he has worked on, so I asked him why that is.

Spoton Imaging Big Screen
Posted on Sat, 19 Nov 2011
Spoton Imaging Big Screen is a browser-based full screen background slideshow.
-- 'Big Screen' tool is a browser-based full screen background slideshow (based on Supersized) for displaying unlimited slide images, including options to display a company logo with URL link, a text area, and up to five artist names with their URL links.
-- themes or skin styles (choose between stack or grid style) provide page presentation for thumbs and their text details, including page navigation for thumbs defined in one of the image file systems.
-- 'Thumb manager' tool helps to deal with missing thumbs by providing options to generate new thumbs from their main images and display generic 'missing thumb' images when there are no thumbs available. This means that you no longer need to manually create thumbs yourself; simply define your main images and let Thumb manager generate the thumbs (on the fly or permanently) automatically for you.
-- additional functionality include 12 dashboard slots for defining images; two types of image file systems (a 'drop-and-view' file for displaying images quickly, and a configuration 'ini' file for displaying images with accompanying text and HTML attributes for CSS styling); a memory boost setting to help increase memory for generating thumbs from large main images (e.g. 5MB or above); and capability to run jQuery in no-conflict mode.
-- module dashboard has been redesigned to enhance the user experience; it includes colour-coded sections for each functionality, an extensive on-line documentation, and makes use of tabs to organise the functional areas.
-- free for personal or business use (GPL License).

True Typography
Posted on Sat, 19 Nov 2011
Say “Hello!†to the one and only Joomla! CMS plug-in that indeed improves the quality of texts formatting providing automatic typography functionality. True Typography is a step to rebirth of good old typography traditions that always existed in printing but are undeservedly neglected on the web.
What does it actually do? True Typography doesn't bother about inserting some odd fonts nor it is limited to the "smart quotes" thing and other simple tricks. It’s a full-featured automatic typography script that includes the following:

Micro Deal auction Factory
Posted on Sat, 19 Nov 2011
Micro Deal Auction Factory is a scaled down alternative to our flagship extension, Auction Factory.
It works by allowing users to sell services or products at a fixed price throughout the website.
The fixed price is set by the admin and cannot be changed/increased by the users. The users can however post items in a quantity and buyers can purchase one item at a time.
Payment is not done like in an ordinary auction between the buyer and seller, actually, the seller offers his services via the website and all his earnings are kept by the website until he chooses to withdraw the money. The admin is notified whenever a user wants to withdraw an amount.
From the backend, the administrator can set a minimum value at which the seller can withdraw his earnings. A commission can be kept by the website if desired, the commission percent is set by the admin.
On the “Earnings†page the seller can see exactly the commission he will be charged, the minimum amount he can withdraw and also the currency in which deals are made on the website.
Also on the earnings page the user can view his total earnings, total withdrawn and pending withdrawals which the admin has to issue, in a single tab. Two more tabs are available which show his Sold and Bought deals, the email is shown here so that users can get in touch for product delivery. Users can set a finalized deal as Solved after delivery.
In short, Micro Deal Auction Factory allows you, as admin, to:
Set commission for withdrawals
Set a unique price
Set currency
Set minimum withdraw sum
Test your website by using Paypal Sandbox before going live
Manage payments with a simple to use user list, and filter users which have requested payments
Add any number of categories
Publish/unpublish and edit ads
Select between different date formats
Configure pagination for deals, comments and earnings
Set image width and height
Send automated notifications for all actions on the website
Keep a payment log
Easily manage user reports for deal and comments
The user frontend experience is also quite intensive for such a small extension.
When posting deals the user can upload a picture, set start and end date, set a quantity for the item he is selling and also a description and a title. The deals are posted in categories for easy management and browsing. Also there is a quick search by title module.
Besides the comments users can leave on the deal, they can also rate it by using the friendly thumbs up/down system. If a rude deal or comment is posted, other users can report it and the admin will take care of it.

VikFormPRO
Posted on Sat, 19 Nov 2011
VikForm PRO lets you create a professional form in just 3 steps:
1. General Settings of the form (intro and closing text of the page, enable or disable saving data received, administrator's e-mail address, privacy text etc.)
2. Add the fields to the form (choice of the type, possible check on the type of data, campo obligatory or not ecc.)
3. Publish the form in a menu
Once the form is created you can also create a custom landing page which can also write some of the data posted by the user (Example: Thanks Mr. {NAME} {LASTNAME}, we will respond within the next 24 hours.).
Creation of custom e-mail notifications for possible email addresses posted by the user (Example: Dear Sir {LASTNAME}, your request has been sent successfully. We will respond to your address {EMAIL} as soon as possible.).
Possibility of limiting the number of "submits" by creating Bases. You can create Bases with a number of availability (limited or even unlimited) and link them up to a form. This works perfectly for those who need to create application-forms. It's also possible to create a landing page in case of failure, for example if the base selected is no longer available (Example: We are sorry but the base {BASE} has been already booked).
Each field of the form can be set as "unique", namely it has never been posted by anyone before this time.
You can also save your data by creating an exportable table in the CSV format for Excel.

Load jQuery Module
Posted on Sat, 19 Nov 2011
Does your Joomla site need jQuery and MooTools?
According to some websites how we can use both frameworks is as follows:
1.Load jQuery
2.Execute "jQuery.noConflict();"
3.Load MooTools
4.Execute javascript as follows:
- Normal way for Mootools
- Using "jQuery" instead of "$" for jQuery
It depends on what Joomla extension you use, but my website started displaying javascript errors when I used both Mootools and jQuery because it just loaded MooTools at first.
So I made a module that loads jQuery as avoiding the confliction when you try using them together. This jQuery module loads each framework as it should be.

[SOLVED] Gantry for WordPress Updater Issue
Posted on Tue, 20 Sep 2011
I'm happy to inform that all of the directory-naming issues are now resolved, and that it's again safe to use the WordPress updater to update your version of the Gantry Plugin. From now on every time we release the new version of the Gantry plugin, it will be added to the WordPress.org plugins directory so everyone can easily stay up-to-date.
In order to make the update process easier we've decided to place the Gantry plugin in the WordPress plugins directory, so everybody can easily update it like any other plugin. Unfortunately it didn't go as well as we expected. Because of the naming mistake WordPress isn't replacing the files in the old plugin directory but creates a new one. We're working on fixing that ASAP so everybody can safely and easily update their Gantry.
Please DON'T update the gantry framework via the WordPress updater until the naming issue has been resolved.
If you already updated your plugin, the solution is to FTP to the wp-content/plugins/ directory and change the directory's name from 'gantry-template-framework' to 'gantry', go back to the Plugins menu in the admin and reactivate the Gantry framework or remove it completely and install the version from the http://gantry-framework.org or the one found in your theme download directory.
I'm very sorry about that and hope that we'll be able the sort this out really quickly.

Joomla.org gets a redesign
Posted on Tue, 22 Nov 2011
Yesterday, the main Joomla site, joomla.org, got a new design. The design has been in the works for quite a while, and finally it's here.
Personally, I think the new front page is a lot cleaner and structured in a better way than the previous one. It conveys a more professional and perhaps corporate (is that a good thing...?) look than before. Focus is on where to get Joomla, what is Joomla, who uses it, as well as news items from different sources. The news sections are easier to spot now, and you spend less time looking at the page to determine if something is new or not.

K2 TwitterTweet
Posted on Wed, 23 Nov 2011
Joomla K2 TwitterTweet is a simple but powerful plugin for K2, that automatically tweets your new articles to your Twitter page.
This way all your Twitter followers instantly knows when your site have updated contents. The plugin will automatically tweet your article title along with a tinyurl to your article. It will also create #hashtags based on the K2 tags in our article. As simple as that.
Works out of the box without any thirdparty or API registrations.
FEATURES
* Joomla 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 native
* Tested on K2 2.5+
* Automatically tweet out new articles.
* Support for TinyURL.
* Support for Twitter Hashtags
* Specify which article categories to tweet
* Works in both frontend and backend
* Languages included:
- English
- Swedish
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Tweets are triggered everytime an article gets visited (this is due to K2 not supporting backend events). For example, lets say you visit a K2 article on your website, what happens under the hood is the following:
TwitterTweet makes a few checks before tweeting:
* Is this article already tweeted?
* Article published?
* Should article category be tweeted?
* Is article public or for registred users (no tweet)?
* Have I already tweeted within the delay time?
* Plus a few more checks....
TwitterTweet creates a shortened version of your URL (tinyURL) to save space in your tweet.
TwitterTweet translates the first three tags to hashtags
The Tweet will be created by putting together the Article Title, tinyURL and hashtags. If the tweet is longer than 140 characters, the article title will be shortened.
Since the plugin is triggered by visits it will basically be a fully automated solution to help promoting your website. All you have to do is sit back and make the plugin do the work for you.

K2 BlogPing
Posted on Wed, 23 Nov 2011
This plugin adds blog pingback functionality to Joomla, just like the ones you find in Wordpress.
A Ping is a message is used to let other people know that you have published new content on your site. The ping message is sent to different Update Servers of your choice, which in turn processes your ping to make your new post show up in different blog listings like Technorati and Google Blogs for example.
So why would you want to ping? One word: Traffic!
The more you let everyone know you have new posts, the more traffic to your site you'll expect. A ping also notifies different search engines that your site has updated.
The BlogPing Plugin is configured with Ping-o-matic by default, but you can add as many Update Services as you wish. The best thing about Ping-o-matic is that it automatically forwards your ping to 11 other Update Services and search engines.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The plugin is triggered everytime your page gets visited, to see if theres any new posts made since the last ping. If it finds new content, a ping is sent to the Update Services you've specified. You can just sit back and relax while the plugin automatically promotes your website.
INSTALLATION
BlogPing is installed like any other extension. It consists of one simple plugin that makes the job for you. One installation file for all Joomla versions (J1.5-J1.7) makes it dead simple to install.
CONFIGURATION
The BlogPing is configured to work out of the box, after you've enabled the plugin. You could still tweak the settings of your choice:
* Specify which categories to ping. Some or all?
* Enter a list of Update Services to use.
* Settings to ping on new posts or new and updated posts
* Enable or disable display of messages in backend.
REQUIREMENTS
* Works on Joomla 1.5+
* Tested on K2 2.5.1
* PHP 5 required
LANGUAGES INCLUDED

Hopefully your ping will get You tons of new visitors, that you otherwise never would have reached.

BlogPing Pro
The plugin automatically pings when an article is saved. It also supports scheduled publishing, which then gets triggered everytime your page gets visited, to see if theres any new posts published made since the last ping.
* Works on Joomla 1.5+
* PHP 5 required
LANGUAGES INCLUDED

Social Profile Popup Icons
Posted on Wed, 23 Nov 2011
What's Included (Module & Plugin):
This package includes:
Social Profile Popup for Joomla 1.5 (Module & Plugin)
Social Profile Popup for Joomla 1.6 (Module & Plugin)
Social Profile Popup for Joomla 1.7 (Module & Plugin)
General Overview:
Similar to the Social Pop plugin for Wordpress, this module and plugin have animated popup icons that link to your profile pages on the various social media sites found online. However unlike the Wordpress Social Pop plugin these two extensions do not use any javascript. All of the animation is done using CSS. Check out how the look HERE.
Our Social Profile Popup Icons allows you to display a link to any or all of your profile pages including 94 different social media networking sites. Use this module or plugin to help increase the number of followers you have on all of the top social networking sites.
Social networking sites like Linkedin, StumbleUpon, and Digg, just to name a few, are growing more rapidly every single day. If you only have profiles on Facebook and Twitter you are missing out on far too many very popular social hubs that are sure to bring more traffic to your website and can put more money in your pocket if you take the time to grow your network.
When it comes to Internet networking you can really never have too many accounts. Why not create an account on every Social Networking Site you find in this entire module or plugin. Yes, it is very time consuming and does take quite a bit of work, but if you take the time to fill out all of the profiles completely and put a link back to your website in every one of them, you are guaranteed to increase traffic to your website.
Features:
94 Social Media Sites to Choose From
Display the Links in any View: (Article, Category, or Front Page)
Display the Links at the Top or Bottom of Your Articles (or Both)
Embed Code - Place the Icons Anywhere Within any Article {socialprofilepopup}
Choose the Size of the Icons (2px to 64px)
Create Custom CSS Style Code in Plugin Configuration
Built in Mouse-Over Animated Effects:
Popup Icons
In this version of our module or plugin you have total control over how you would like to display your icons. You can choose to display your icons in any size, all the way from 18px up to 48px and any size in between.
In the Plugin you can choose to display the icons in article view, category view or frontpage view. You can also exclude articles by listing their numbers so the icons will not be displayed if you do not want them to be. Just added 'embed code' feature. This allows you to place the icons anywhere within any article simply by placing an embed code within the article text. {socialprofilepopup}

Always upgrade your Joomla site
Posted on Fri, 25 Nov 2011
The other day, I got an email from a reader about a problem with content in Joomla articles (more about that in another post). In the email, he mentioned he was using Joomla 1.5.20 (at the moment, 1.5.25 is the current version).
So, the first thing I told him was to upgrade his Joomla site to the latest version. At first, he hestitated. It's too hard! But after a few words of caution, he came around and changed his mind. And I think you should, too.

Joomla Wins the Packt Open Source CMS Award
Posted on Mon, 21 Nov 2011
Joomla has won the Packt Publishing award for the top open source CMS.
Now in its sixth year, many consider the Packt Open Source Award as a top honor for an open source project. Joomla won the award based on a combination of public voting and input by a panel of judges consisting of open source luminaries.
Julian Copes of Packt Publishing said:
“Although around since 2005, Joomla really reinvented itself this year with the introduction of Joomla 1.6 and 1.7, the first product releases for the CMS since 2008. Furthermore, Joomla realized dramatic growth this year as evidenced by its number of downloads and documented government sites powered by Joomla. We are proud to honor Joomla with its third Packt Open Source Award since we launched it six years ago.â€
Joomla previously won the same award, the Packt Open Source CMS Award, in 2006 and also won the Packt Best PHP Open Source CMS Award 2007. Some of the milestones the open source CMS reached this year that contributed to it winning the Packt award include:
Joomla surpassed 26 million downloads. Although it launched in 2005, this number is only from 2007 to the present since that is when Joomla began documenting downloads.
It documented more than 2,900 government sites worldwide powered by Joomla. These include the U.S. Central Command, U.K. Ministry of Defense and many more.
Info-Tech Research recently confirmed Joomla powers more than 1.5 million websites. These include Citibank, eBay, General Electric and many more.

IceVerticalMenu
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2011
With the popular release of the IceMegaMenu module and its positive feedback that it received from our members we at IceTheme created another great menu module which is similar to the IceMegaMenu but it can be used in vertical position.
The IceVerticalMenu module shares the same paramters and the same javascript file with the IceMegaMenu module which means that you can easily use the 2 modules on the same page with no conflict at all. Also in conjuction with this module you will find the IceMegaMenu plugin to take your menu on the next level by creating next level dropdown separated by columns or include any joomla module that you wish on the dropdown.
On the other hand you can even disable completely the JavaScript through the module paraters to make your website fast and the menu will work great.
And most imporatant of all ... its FREE.

10 Great Features in MissionControl 2
Posted on Tue, 08 Nov 2011
MissionControl is a FREE Joomla Administrator template that was created to provide a more pleasing admin experience as well as improving efficiency and reducing clutter for an overall improved user experience. Traditionally it has been hard to justify switching the administrator template from the default one because they did not add much tangible value, and were either too complicated or too troublesome to use. MissionControl attempts to alleviate these issues by providing a simple and intuitive interface that focuses on efficiency as well as general good looks while maintaining core similarities to the default Joomla administrator you already are familiar with.
This list contains a few features that will improve your life when you configure and manage Joomla using MissionControl.

What is the Joomla Platform, and why should you care?
Posted on Thu, 10 Nov 2011
A while ago, the Joomla Production Leadership Team decided to split the Joomla project into two parts. One part is the CMS we all know and love. The actual system we're using every day. The other part is the layer behind the CMS, the inner workings of Joomla. Simply put, it can be defined as the contents of the /libraries/ folder in Joomla. This is now called the J!Platform.
If you're an end-user of Joomla, you probably don't care too much about this. As long as it works, it's all good, right? Still, I believe you should know why the J!Platform can be part of what will ensure the solid future of the Joomla project.
As a PHP developer, you should really take a look at the J!Platform and what it can do.

A responsive them for Joomla
Posted on Sun, 06 Nov 2011
This isn't a complicated theme. You could install this, toggle a couple of options and you are on your way. With Google fonts enabled too - it looks nice and unique.
The theme works - it is extremely clean and module based (if you want) so you can pretty much have it to whatever you want - size of images you use are basically where you have to spend the time thinking.

Why pasting content from Word into Joomla is a bad idea
Posted on Tue, 06 Dec 2011
As it happens, readers email me about problems on their Joomla sites or about things they don't quite get. And I try my best to answer their questions. I don't have the time for doing specific support for every user that emails me, but sometimes a quick look at the site can help the user solve his problem easily.
Last week, a reader emailed me about some problems with the content on his site. For some reason, the content was showing nicely on all browsers except on Internet Explorer 8. Was I able to help?

Getting Ready for Mutli-Database Support
Posted on Thu, 08 Dec 2011
There was some big news this week in Joomla! CMS development with the merging of massive rewriting of queries. Why? And why rewrite? Because this makes it possible to run the Joomla! CMS on many different databases, not just MySQL and MySQLi as in the past.
As people who follow these things know, for many years there has been a goal to make Joomla! “database agnostic†which is to say to allow Joomla to run on any database. For a while the Platform has had drivers for Microsoft databases SQLSrv and SQLAzure . There are also pull requests (that is, requests to merge code into the platform)  on Postgresql, Oracle, SQLite and PDO drivers. Great work by Gabriele Pongelli (Postgres), Sudhi Seshachala and the team at Hoodooku (Microsoft databases)  and Omar Ramos (Oracle, SQLite and PDO). If you want to work on a driver for another database (db2 anyone? Drizzle?) you can just fork the platform and go for it!
