Widgetkit is getting bigger
Posted on Wed, 13 Jul 2011
Widgetkit has been around for 6 weeks now and during this time a lot has happened. First we like to thank everyone who tried the Widgetkit betas and has send us feedback. We really appreciate it! Until today we have released 5 betas including bugfixes, optimizations and new widgets. Here are some notable features we've added so far: translations, RTL support, editor support for Joomla's TinyMCE and JCE, caption support for slideshows and HTML5 video playback in the lightbox. With the upcoming release of Joomla 1.7 on 19. July 2011, we've also updated Widgetkit to support the latest 1.7 version as well. This makes Widgetkit work perfectly on Joomla 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 and the latest Wordpress 3.2. Here is an overview of all the new widgets we've added since the first beta release: Gallery The gallery widget provides a great way to create an image gallery with multiple images on your website. With the built in directory browser you can easily add or remove image source directories and create your individual gallery in no time. To change the gallery's overall appearance we've added two new styles with BETA5, wall and slider, to current slideshow style. The wall style allows you to create image and polaroid walls with a lightbox and spotlight effect. The slider style puts the images next to each other and shows them fullsize on mouse hover with a sliding effect. Just pick your favorite style and everything else is done automatically in the background for you like image resizing and caching. It has never been that easy to create an awesome looking gallery! Map The map widget let's you create maps with multiple locations and markers. Powered by the latest Google Maps API you can change various settings to create a map which perfectly fits into your website. The new style settings allow you to change overall map colors and adopt your site colors to the map. We promise that you'll love this one! Accordion The accordion widget creates a group of items using a smooth sliding effect when selecting an item to display its content. We added a simple and clean style to make the accordion easily match to a broad range of websites. Media Player We unveiled the media player already in BETA4 which let's you playback video and audio files directly in your website content. Embedding videos is simply done through HTML5 <video /> element which is also widely supported on mobile devices like iPhones, iPads or Android phones and tablets. You also don't need to worry about older browsers, because it has a flash fallback for all who don't support these HTML5 elements. You can even play your .mp3 files by using the new <audio /> element. Great, is'nt it? ZOO Integration Widgetkit and ZOO are now able to communicate! This has been one of the most requested features and we are glad to deliver it to you now. By using a Joomla plugin you can display any ZOO content within our freshly released widgets like accordion, map and slideshow. Make sure to have the latest ZOO version installed as you'll need it to customize the content that is being displayed. The workflow is pretty straight forward and should already be known to you, if you've been using the ZOOtools. There is a new button in the Widgetkit dashboard called "Add new (ZOO)". Upon hitting it, you'll be able to choose what content from ZOO to display. By customizing the layouts of the item types you may assign any element you want to be displayed. So enjoy the power of our fresh widgets paired with the comfort and the flexibility of the ZOO. What's next? We are still not done yet! We will continue with adding new features to Widgetkit and we are also working on new widgets and style variations for existing widgets. If you have not tried it yet, make sure to check it out and send us feedback about how it works for you!

RocketTheme Conference
Posted on Wed, 20 Apr 2011
We have been internally discussing the possibility of hosting a RocketTheme User/Developer Conference. The idea is that we would organize and host a 1 or 2 day conference in a that we could use to cover a variety of topics. To start with we will probably focus on Joomla as it's the most popular CMS among our members. Topics we are bouncing around include: Customizing Existing Club Template - How to take an existing design and modify it completely for your clients Design-to-Template - Workshop on how to take a custom design to finished Joomla template (multiple part full day workshop covering all aspects of the process) Cross-Browser Testing and Gotchas - How to debug and fix browser bugs and issues Gantry Framework Tutorial - The ins-and-outs of the Gantry Framework including how to implement and extend it RocketTheme Extensions - How to use, modify, and implement a wide-variety of functionality with our array of extensions MooTools Development - Core concepts, differences compared to other JS frameworks, developing cool mootools based scripts, how to upgrade scripts from version 1.11 to 1.3 Advanced Q&A - Ask the team anything! If you have any ideas for a session that would be beneficial to a large portion of users, please reply to this thread with your concepts. What we are interested in is how many people would be interested in attending a conference like this? We are not certain on any exact details (location, price, schedule) at this point, but if we get a decent amount of interest we may proceed with planning and development of this idea. If this idea is successful and popular, we could have multiple of similar events in a variety of locations. Please provide us your best 'honest' answer to if you would be likely to attend an event. Please answer without regard to location at this point. We're trying to gauge the validity of the 'idea' not specifically an event in a certain locale. Voting is open to all past and current club members on our forum, so please vote now! Cheers! {rokintensedebate} {rokstyle} .rt-blog-listing ul li strong {color:#333;} {/rokstyle}

Magento 1.4 Development Cookbook Review
Posted on Mon, 11 Apr 2011
I've spent the last couple of evenings reading over the latest Magento books from Packt Publishing - namely their Magento 1.4 Development Cookbook and their Magento 1.4 Themes Design - which they kindly sent me review copies of after discovering RocketTheme "while searching for professionals with Magento development experience". Considering I've spent the best part of the last 2 years working exclusively with Magento - both developing extensions and constructing themes - I guess I'm pretty well versed in the ways of Magento, but as Magento is such a large system, I figured I'd likely learn something new, so I took them up on their offer. So, in case anyone is considering purchasing some Magento study guides, I'm going to give you a quick review of each book. First up, it's the "Development Cookbook".

Update on Joomla 1.6 Conversion Progress
Posted on Wed, 02 Mar 2011
Over the past two months we've been diligently working on the process of converting our Joomla 1.5 framework, extensions, and templates to Joomla 1.6. As we've explained in previous blog posts, this is not a trivial task and on top of our existing heavy development workload, this has taken more time than we had originally anticipated. However, we are now making great progress, and the last few major hurdles have been tackled. Today we released 9 Joomla 1.6 extensions, and we have at least 8 more that are very close to being packaged and released also.

How to report a Joomla bug
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2011
The CMS called Joomla is a product in constant evolution. Yesterday, the Joomla Production Leadership Team released Joomla 1.7.1. And it's all based on volunteer efforts. When a new version like 1.7 is released, there is bound to be number of bugs or incompatibilities in it. The complexity of Joomla, all the extensions and templates available, as well as the human factor makes that an inevitable fact. And sometimes, one finds out that the solution that was chosen doesn't work as well as expected and needs to be adjusted. To be able to find all bugs and incompatibilities, the PLT, needs feedback from the community. The question is, how do you report a bug in a way that is useful?

Important Security Vulnerability Fixed
Posted on Sat, 12 Nov 2011
A couple of days ago we were notified about a SQL injection security vulnerability in our Ajax-enabling RokModule extension. This extensions is generally not used by itself, but rather it enables Ajax for the following extensions for both Joomla 1.5 and 1.7: RokStock RokWeather RokNewspager Even if you are not currently using these extensions on your RocketTheme based site, you may still be vulnerable if you have these extensions installed. It is strongly advised that you download the latest version of RokModule and install it immediately to address this issue: RokModule v1.3 for Joomla 1.7 RokModule v1.4 for Joomla 1.5 You can determine if you have this extensions installed and if it needs updating by using the Extensions Manager in the Joomla Administrator and clicking on the Components sub menu option. Then you just need to look for RokModule in the list and check the version. You can download the latest version here: RokModule Downloads NOTICE: for Joomla 1.5 it's safer to uninstall the existing version of the com_rokmodule component prior to installing the version. Also we've updated the extensions themselves with this updated version, along with RocketLaunchers and extensions bundles for the affected templates.

Languages: 1.7.3 improvements
Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2011
1.7.3 is introducing quite a few improvements concerning multilanguage and languages in general. A. Multilanguage 1. In 1.7.1 was introduced the new Multilanguage Status Module: http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1501-171-new-multilanguage-status-module.html In 1.7.3, a necessary improvement is implemented: checking the status of the Contacts linked to an Author, as it is necessary to create a unique contact per author and tagged to 'All' languages OR one contact per published Content Language. If an error occurs, a message is added in the modal with the user name concerned (Thanks Marc Studer and Christophe Demko): 2. It is now possible to customize the Site Name depending on the Content Language displayed. A new parameter has been created in Extensions=>Language Manager=>Content tab=>Edit a Content Language: 3. By enabling a parameter when editing the Language filter plugin, users will at last get a new feature that has been expected for long: the Content Language prefix will not be used anymore in the url for the Site default language when SEF is on! (Thanks to all who participated in trying to patch this —See: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemEdit&tracker_item_id=25037 — and to Christophe Demko who solved it.) Extensions=>Plugin Manager=>Filter by System=>Edit System - Language Filter Front-end result: 4. The batch processing in various Managers in back-end now includes a Language field. It is now possible to batch-change language for ticked items, as well as batch-copy including Language change to another Menu (in Menu Manager) or another Category (Thanks Michael Babker). We hope to also include Menu Associations in this process for 2.5 .   B. General Languages improvements 1. Global Configuration now includes a default Offline Message per Language pack. If this option is chosen, the offline message will be customized depending on the site language displayed. It is always possible to override this value by using an xx-XX.override.ini ( See http://docs.joomla.org/International_Enhancements_for_Version_1.6#Language_String_Overrides ) 2. The Administrator Help menu may now propose different forums to link to, depending on Language. A registered language pack may propose a link to the Official Language sub-forum on forum.joomla.org. Custom distributions may propose links to their own external Community Forum by adding in their customized sample data the said link. Users may decide of their preferred help forum. Module Manager=>Filter by Administrator=>Edit Admin Menu 3. A new column has been added in the Installed Languages Managers to display the Language tag (en-GB, fr-FR, it-IT, etc.) Thanks again to all who participated in implementing these improvements and do not forget to upgrade to 1.7.3 ! http://www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5392-joomla-173-released.html And last but not least, we do now have an official multilanguage demo site (now updated to 1.7.3) where users can log in back-end to make sure they structure their site correctly: See: http://multilingual-joomla-demo.cloudaccess.net/

The Busiest Year Ever for Joomla!Days
Posted on Wed, 09 Nov 2011
During the last year we've shared some hard numbers behind Joomla's growth. We saw that Joomla.org has grown 50% in 2 years and also that there were now 1/2 million forum users, 25 million Joomlacode downloads of Joomla and over 8000 extensions on the JED. This weekend marks another important milestone: 2011 will be the busiest year ever for Joomla!Days. The community have a done a great job listing all over the Joomla!Days that have taken place: http://docs.joomla.org/Joomla!Days. The previous high was 23 events in 2009. This year there have been 21 events already and four more are planned for this week alone: Joomla!Day Australia - November 5-6, 2011 - Sydney, Australia Joomla!Day Finland - November 5, 2011 - Helsinki, Finland Joomla!Day Spain - November 9-10, 2011 - Zaragoza, Spain Joomla!Day Midwest - November 12, 2011 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Thank You It's worth taking a moment to thank all of the organizers who have made all of the previous 100+ events possible. The Dutch community deserves a mention: every year they've run a Joomla!Day once and sometimes even twice. Also, welcome to the newcomers in 2011: Chile, Algeria, Malaysia, Greece, Chicago, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milwaukee, Israel. We hope to see all of you at a Joomla!Day in 2012. If you think you can help us hold even more events next year, the Joomla community has a great guide on how to get started.

2011 Joomla Day New York Recap
Posted on Wed, 02 Nov 2011
Thanks to the platinum sponsor Seblod, creator of a new CCK for Joomla!, we were able to host a dinner party on Friday night for 50 of our sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and international guests. The wonderful staff at House of Brews made our event quite memorable. It was exciting to have so much Joomla! talent in one room - core team, OSM board members, major component developers, hosting companies, and grateful end users mingled as the excitement level grew for the coming weekend events.   On Saturday, our generous benefactor Microsoft helped us invite all conference attendees to a party at the House of Brews. Seventy participants discussed the events of the day over beer, wings, and sliders.   After the planning and craziness is over, I can happily say that JoomlaDay2011 was a tremendous success.   Friday, the leadership team along with about 30 other attendees met to discuss where Joomla! should go in 2013. Unfortunately, I was unable to participate as I would have liked because I was setting up for the weekend. Regardless, I heard lots of great discussions occurred.  It is exciting to see where Joomla! will be going to in just a few years!   Friday night we invited the sponsors, speakers, and volunteers to another party at the House of Brews. They really put on a great event!  We had beer towers, appetizers, a great dinner, and, of course, dessert.  They even presented a chance for me to mingle and meet with many of our international guests.  What a way to start the weekend!  The conversations ranged from politics, to Joomla!, and to current world events.  I am proud to say we had guests from various countries including Western Australia, Israel, Columbia, Germany, France, Canada, and more.   Saturday morning started very early with a couple of headaches.  Unfortunately, the coffee was not brewing as it should have been, but that did not slow down the presenters or workshops.  Although, I must admit, people seemed a little fuzzy before they finally got their cup of Joe.  With plenty of bagels, muffins, juice, and other accoutrement, the keynote began at 8:45.  A special thanks to Ryan for creating a video for us that we were able to watch all together.    Each session on Saturday lasted for over an hour.  We had sessions based on extensions and 3rd party developers, sessions based on what can be done with Joomla! from a developer perspective, and other sessions focused on the 'business end' of Joomla!.  Each session was well attended, and there were definitely a variety of sessions to choose from.  In fact, the number one complaint that I have received so far was that attendees had too many quality sessions to choose from.  Well, we have a solution for that, too!  We have posted the videos on the www.JoomladayNYC.com website for attendees to check out sessions they were unable to attend.   Saturday ended again with another trip to the House of Brews.  Thanks to a generous donation from Microsoft we were able to provide appetizers and beer for the attendees.  I think everyone enjoyed another night out with the Joomla! folks!  Some did ask why we were at the House of Brews again.  To be honest, we could not find another bar/restaurant that would host our event because we had no idea how many would attend on Saturday night.  It could have been anywhere from 10 to 70.  So, instead of picking a place where we would have to wait in line, we decided to be better safe than sorry.  A special shout out goes to Marian Konop of Gotham Informatics who planned all of these parties.   Sunday morning began with another near coffee catastrophe, but we persevered by having the coffee ready for our guests by 8:30.  Thank goodness.  With the amount of work to be done Sunday, we really needed the caffeine!  Elin gave a great keynote about Joomla! and how to get involved, which is something we all need to do.  We even added a 'bug squashing' session that day.  Rob Schley gave the entire group a view into the Unified Content Model that he started creating at Ebay.  We are looking forward to seeing what gets integrated and how all of this will work out.  The sessions Sunday were developer-focused; we adjusted some tracks as needed to try to make as many participants as comfortable as possible.   We closed the day on Sunday with a stump-the-speaker one more time, and the questions and answers were as various as any JoomlaDay conference should be.   All in all, we, the organizers from this year are exhausted yet energized.  I know personally that I am looking forward to attending other JoomlaDay to have the experience from a  'guest' perspective and 'learn a little more'.   Thanks again to the sponsors, speakers, and volunteers for following through with a great event!   Check out our facebook page with pictures at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Joomla-Day-New-York-City/133644853352910   Signed, Laura Gordon www.RytechSites.com   Marian Konop www.GothamInformatics.com

Search and Joomla! CMS 2.5
Posted on Thu, 13 Oct 2011
Search is a central function for any content management system, and the Development Working Group has been working in a Github repository on making search be super powered in Joomla! 2.5.  Michael Babker has taken the lead in organizing this along with Chris Davenport. So far six people have contributed code. The original code for Finder in Joomla! 1.5 was done by Rob Schley, Louis Landry  and Andrew Eddie and distributed by JXtended. I’ve heard Rob say at several Joomla! Days that Finder is the favorite of the extensions he has worked on, so I asked him why that is.

What's Included (Module & Plugin): This package includes: Social Profile Popup for Joomla 1.5 (Module & Plugin) Social Profile Popup for Joomla 1.6 (Module & Plugin) Social Profile Popup for Joomla 1.7 (Module & Plugin) General Overview: Similar to the Social Pop plugin for Wordpress, this module and plugin have animated popup icons that link to your profile pages on the various social media sites found online. However unlike the Wordpress Social Pop plugin these two extensions do not use any javascript. All of the animation is done using CSS. Check out how the look HERE. Our Social Profile Popup Icons allows you to display a link to any or all of your profile pages including 94 different social media networking sites. Use this module or plugin to help increase the number of followers you have on all of the top social networking sites. Social networking sites like Linkedin, StumbleUpon, and Digg, just to name a few, are growing more rapidly every single day. If you only have profiles on Facebook and Twitter you are missing out on far too many very popular social hubs that are sure to bring more traffic to your website and can put more money in your pocket if you take the time to grow your network. When it comes to Internet networking you can really never have too many accounts. Why not create an account on every Social Networking Site you find in this entire module or plugin. Yes, it is very time consuming and does take quite a bit of work, but if you take the time to fill out all of the profiles completely and put a link back to your website in every one of them, you are guaranteed to increase traffic to your website. Features: 94 Social Media Sites to Choose From Display the Links in any View: (Article, Category, or Front Page) Display the Links at the Top or Bottom of Your Articles (or Both) Embed Code - Place the Icons Anywhere Within any Article {socialprofilepopup} Choose the Size of the Icons (2px to 64px) Create Custom CSS Style Code in Plugin Configuration Built in Mouse-Over Animated Effects: Popup Icons In this version of our module or plugin you have total control over how you would like to display your icons. You can choose to display your icons in any size, all the way from 18px up to 48px and any size in between. In the Plugin you can choose to display the icons in article view, category view or frontpage view. You can also exclude articles by listing their numbers so the icons will not be displayed if you do not want them to be. Just added 'embed code' feature. This allows you to place the icons anywhere within any article simply by placing an embed code within the article text. {socialprofilepopup}

Version 11.3 of the Platform has just been merged into the CMS and we are down to the last few weeks before 2.5! We plan to release Version 2.5 beta on or before December 20th. To make this schedule, we have until December 12th to propose and test new features. 1. Please test the present state of the CMS with your favorite extensions and report any bug on the Tracker. TEST: The CMS can be downloaded from https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/zipball/master REPORT ISSUES: Please post on the tracker http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemBrowse&tracker_id=8103 2. Please test the New Features (and propose some with code attached if you want): TEST: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemBrowse&tracker_id=8549 Specially look at those with Status "Pending" when testing One does not need to be a geek or PHP guru to test the proposed patches. And your efforts will really help in getting your favorite CMS in good shape for 2.5! As many of you know, version 2.5 is the long-term-support release that ends the 1.6/1.7/2.5 series. As such, the update to 2.5 will be seamless and will be handled exactly the same as the update from 1.6 to 1.7 or 1.7.2 to 1.7.3. It is expected that all extensions should work without changes for version 2.5. However, extension developers should test their programs to make sure. We hope to get some great new features into version 2.5, but we need the community to help with the process. Thanks!

El Villarreal CF usa Joomla!
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2011
--- Villareal CF, a First Division spanish football (soccer) team which has played the UEFA Champions LEague this season, has just launched its new official website, completely done using Joomla!. The website http://www.villarrealcf.es has been built using Joomla! 1.5 along side with extensions like K2 and Joom!Fish. There's some development pending yet (like the english translation), but probably the club wanted to have it live before Christmas. Football is considered as the most popular sport in the world. Born during the second half of the 19th century, it's currently played regularly by over 250 million people from over 200 countries, having the highest global television audience in sport.

IceVerticalMenu
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2011
With the popular release of the IceMegaMenu module and its positive feedback that it received from our members we at IceTheme created another great menu module which is similar to the IceMegaMenu but it can be used in vertical position. The IceVerticalMenu module shares the same paramters and the same javascript file with the IceMegaMenu module which means that you can easily use the 2 modules on the same page with no conflict at all. Also in conjuction with this module you will find the IceMegaMenu plugin to take your menu on the next level by creating next level dropdown separated by columns or include any joomla module that you wish on the dropdown. On the other hand you can even disable completely the JavaScript through the module paraters to make your website fast and the menu will work great. And most imporatant of all ... its FREE.
